Wrike’s From Positivity to Productivity: Exposing the Truth Behind Workplace Happiness report, published earlier this year, found that 54% of UK respondents have willingly taken a pay cut to accept a job that has made them happier.
The report, which surveyed 1,000 employees in the UK, US, France and Germany, also highlighted a correlation between workplace happiness and productivity. With 91% of ‘elated’ respondents feeling ‘very productive’ at work.
The idea that happy employees work harder has also been tested by Economists at The University of Warwick, who carried out a number of experiments. They found that happiness made people 12% more productive.
A 2019 report by Staples found that 41% of employees would take a 10% pay cut for a company that cares more about their health and wellbeing. While 78% believe their employers have a responsibility to help them stay mentally and physically well.
It’s fundamental employers make the happiness and wellbeing of their employees top priority. But what does it take to be happy at work?
In a piece for Harvard Business Review entitled Being Happy at Work Matters, best-selling author, Annie McKee writes, three things that employees need to be fully engaged and happy at work are: a meaningful vision of the future, a sense of purpose and great relationships.
Meanwhile, the Staples Workplace Survey found 90% of employees believe more flexible work arrangements and schedules will increase morals. With 67% saying they would consider leaving their job if their work arrangements became less flexible.
